Canon has been working to reuse raw materials for more than 30 years, and since 2008 has reused 30,690 tonnes of products, or parts of them, and taken 37,917 tonnes of plastic from used products for recycling. There is also an increasing focus on using recycled materials to create packaging, reducing carbon dioxide in the transport of products and reducing energy consumption. Each year Canon spends around 8% of its global turnover on research and development. In 2021, it ranked third in the US patent rankings and first among Japanese companies, ranking in the top five for 36 consecutive years. And, in 2022, it achieved Top Employers Italy and Top Employers Europe certification for the fourth consecutive year.
